In what could be termed a miracle, there was only one injury in the massive car pileup that happened on Southbound U.S. 31 at White Lake Drive. Believed to be a result of the recent winter weather, the pileup began just after 9:30 in the morning and at least two police vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction collision that police estimated to be about 40 vehicles.. Several different city Police, Fire and EMS crews became involved in the rescue to aid stranded motorists, including those from White Lake, Dalton, Muskegon Township, Whitehall, and the Michigan State Police. Rescue units even included a cattle truck to transfer cattle from another truck that had been involved in the pileup.
A Muskegon County Sheriff’s deputy was injured in the multiple-vehicle accident. The injuries appeared minor as the unnamed deputy was awake and aware and speaking after the crash. However the deputy was transferred to a local hospital as a precaution. The rescue operation to clear the highway and to transport the drivers and passengers of stranded cars was praised by Undersheriff Dan Stout. “They all did a fantastic job”.
