Michigan Football Fans Asked to Drive Carefully Around Highway Work Zones

Michigan is home to some very popular football teams – the Detroit Lions, University of Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans.  Fans are anxious to get to the games to enjoy the tailgating festivities, and when it’s time to leave, they are then in a rush to get home.  However, the Michigan Department of Transportation asks for patience from football fans during the season as they work on multiple road and bridge projects throughout the state.

In an effort to help fans plan their route when heading to the football games, MDOT created a webpage dedicated to the projects that could impact travel.  Each week the site is updated with the games and game-day travel restrictions. The MDOT site tells drivers, “If you give yourself a little extra time and plan ahead, you should be able to avoid the blitz and arrive in time for kickoff."

Car accidents in work zones often occur when drivers become impatient and go faster than conditions allow or when they are distracted and do not see the signs warning of upcoming lane closures. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), there were 87,606 crashes in work zones nationwide in 2010. Of those crashes, 576 people died and 37,476 were injured.  106 of the fatalities were to the construction workers.  In Michigan in 2011, there were 10,757 work zone accidents resulting in 2,145 injuries and 24 fatalities.

Our Michigan car accident attorneys encourage all football fans to enjoy the game, but to drive carefully to and from the game.  Driving through highway work zones requires extra attention, and we ask that you not drive while distracted or after drinking.
