A 33-year-old officer with the New Baltimore Police Department was killed earlier this week in a Michigan Car Accident. Reports indicate the crash occurred on the night of Sunday, June 2, along Jefferson Avenue in Chesterfield Township.
According to an article from the Detroit Free Press, the officer was traveling north along Jefferson on his motorcycle as he made his way home from the Selfridge Air National Guard Base. As he neared 21 mile, a 2008 Chevrolet Impala being driving by a 64-year-old Chesterfield Township man attempted to make a left turn in front of him. The motorcyclist did not have time to avoid the car and the two vehicles collided.
It was later determined that the driver of the Impala was both intoxicated and driving on a suspended license at the time of the accident. He was arrested Wednesday on charges of operating with a license suspended causing death and operating while intoxicated causing death. Both crimes carry a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.
The accident highlights the need for more to be done to keep drunk drivers off the road. Data shows that 30 percent of individuals convicted of drunk driving will continue to get behind the wheel after their license is suspended.
The Michigan Personal Injury Attorneys with Michigan Injury Lawyers urge motorists never to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming any amount of alcohol.
