Two Separate Accidents on U.S. 23 in Less than 24 Hours leave One Dead and Two Injured

by Thomas Stroble | April 9th, 2014

A two-vehicle accident that closed down U.S. 23 at Six Mile Road on April 9th leaves one person dead and another injured.  This was the second of two serious crashes that happened on that stretch of U.S. 23 in less than a 24 hour period.

Earlier the same day, a person was pinned in their vehicle after losing control on the highway and flipping their SUV over into trees on the side of the road.  The occupant of the SUV had to be extracted from the vehicle by firefighters and then transported to the University of Michigan Hospital via Survival Flight.

Two accidents in such a short period of time leave a question to the safety for the area of highway where the two accidents happened.  Were the accidents caused by the negligence of other drivers, or were they caused by the road conditions themselves.

The roads of Michigan are maintained by the state and county in which they are located.  A driver has the right to expect the roads to be safe. We expect them to be well maintained with sufficient guardrails, speed limits, and repair to areas that have potholes left from the unforgiving winter.   When excessive accidents occur in a particular area, it leaves the question of safety for the road in that particular area.  If the road is unsafe, who is to blame for the unsafe conditions?

In 2010, Michigan ranked last when compared to the other 49 states in per capita spending to maintain its infrastructure.  Reports claim that this lack of spending is costing some motorists injuries to their property, person and sometimes costing them their lives.

Failure to maintain roads could make the state and local government liable in an accident.  They have the duty to maintain the states infrastructure so that it is safe for all who use it for travel.  If you have been injured, or lost a loved one due to unsafe road conditions on Michigan roads, we may be able to help you recover for your losses.
