Accidents happen when least expected. Most of us understand that being a defensive driver is a good idea while on the roads, but we forget defensive behavior is a good idea at all times. It is important to be aware of the actions of others even when not driving a vehicle.
Recently, a 36-year-old woman and a 2-year-old child were seriously injured when an inexperienced driver backed over them in a parking lot near 23 Mile and Schoenherr Roads in Snelby Township. The woman and child were passing behind the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The minivan that backed over the woman and child was driven by a 16-year-old from Macomb Township. It was determined that alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the accident. The accident may have been the result of the inexperienced driver panicking as a result of seeing the woman and child too late. Could the teenager have hit the gas instead of the brake?
When walking in any commercial parking lot, it is a good idea to watch for parked vehicles back up lights. Often, the person driving is unable to see you and if you pass behind them, you could be a victim in an accident.
It is also a good idea to follow other parking lot etiquette such as walking towards traffic and staying close to parked cars. Walk single file if you are with a companion, and don’t expect cars to stop for you when you are in the pedestrian crossing. Look and wait to make sure the car is aware of you before you cross.
Still, even with every precaution taken, accidents happen. Some just cannot be avoided. Even the most careful person can be injured as a result of someone else not paying attention.
If you are the victim of an accident, there are rights you have for compensation for the injuries you suffer as a result of someone else’s negligent action.
