Rising Stray Animal Population Leads to High Number of Michigan Dog Bites

The population of Detroit may be in decline, city officials say there has been a dramatic rise in the number of stray dogs roaming the city’s streets. The Michigan Dog Bite Injury Lawyers with Michigan Injury Lawyers explain how the increasing number of strays has led to a surge in canine attacks recorded in the metro area.

According to an article published by Bloomberg News, there are as many as 50,000 stray dogs in the city alone. These animals were responsible for a portion of the more than 900 bite reports made last year alone. For instance, one woman was attacked and bitten by two stray dogs as she sat on the front porch of her home four months ago. The attack resulted in the woman losing part of her scalp and being hospitalized for several days.

City officials say the problem began as poverty ran rampant through the city and owners began abandoning dogs. Owners could not afford to keep them and animal shelters couldn't either. At the same time, the dog population in the city was rising due to the volume of illegal dog fighting events taking place.

The problem has led to a need for citizens to be more aware of the dangers of dog attacks. Michigan Injury Lawyers’s team of Michigan Personal Injury Lawyers says citizens should never approach or try to pet strange dogs without owners’ permission.
