Due to a manufacturing error in its Tacoma midsized pickup, auto manufacturer Toyota is recalling 150,000 models. The trucks fall between model years 2001 and 2004. Sold or registered throughout almost two dozen cold-weather states including Michigan, the Tacoma model is being recalled because it has been discovered the spare tire has the potential to fall out.
Reports reveal the plate used to keep the spare tire in place under the truck bed will rust after exposure to road salt. The plate has been known to break resulting in the tire falling out. Apparently, these Tacoma plates were not treated to prevent corrosion. The issue has been blamed for two minor accidents. Tacoma dealers are prepared to inspect plates at no cost to owners.
This is another unfortunate safety recall by Toyota. Recently, the Japanese auto manufacturer pulled almost 3 million vehicles off the road due to steering shaft and water pump issues. Among those recalled were the Corolla compact and the Prius. Last year, Toyota also recalled another 7.43 million cars with faulty power window switches that resulted in fires.
In the past few years, the once-dependable dealer has recalled 14 million vehicles for a number of reasons.
