Michigan Law Protects Young Athletes Against Concussions

Like any other group of Michigan sports buffs, the brain-trauma team at Michigan Injury Lawyers has been electrified by this year’s season of high school football.

Yet our attorneys also know that coaches, parents and our fellow fans are watching this season unfold with baited breath. And no wonder: With the growing awareness of how high-impact sports like football pose the risk of serious injuries, such as concussions, and the resulting impact of such brain traumas to players’ well-being, everyone is worried.

Of course, this is only natural. After all, according to one North Carolina University at Chapel Hill study, high school football was responsible for most of the major injuries high-school athletes suffered in 2011.

Worse still, two of the neck and head injuries noted in the Chapel Hill study were fatal. The first injury happened during a game as one player blocked another, and the other happened when a player made a tackle during practice.

What’s more, the effects of a single injury are the least of what high-school athletes can suffer; as one Purdue University study showed, concussions are typically the cumulative result of an individual experiencing several brain traumas over time. In fact, as a 2011 University of Pennsylvania study found, a single incidence of brain trauma can cause changes to the brain that last forever—sometimes even leading to a disorder akin to Alzheimer’s disease.

Not every impact will end up a concussion. But a traumatic brain injury, or “TBI,” can happen any time a person’s head collides violently with another surface.

Based in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan Injury Lawyers is committed to preserving the rights of all of Michigan’s young athletes who are hurt playing sports. We will not hesitate to bring suit against guilty parties and recover all possible damages from those responsible for such injuries.

If you or your child has experienced or is believed to have experienced a traumatic brain injury, it helps to know your rights.
