Automobile seat belt use nationwide has hit an all-time high of 86 percent, according to new safety numbers.
And in Michigan and the 31 other states where it is against the law not to buckle up the compliance rate is 90 percent.
From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
“When it comes to driving safely, one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your family is to use a seat belt,” said [U.S. Department of] Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood….
“Thanks to the ongoing work of our state and local partners and national efforts such as Click it or Ticket, we’ve made steady gains in belt use in recent years,” said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. “Moving forward, it will be critical to build on this success using a multi-faceted approach that combines good laws, effective enforcement, and public education and awareness.”
Findings from the 2012 NHTSA survey include:
- Seat belt use rose two percent from the 84 percent rate in 2011.
- Buckling up is significantly higher in states that require seat belt use than in states that don’t.
- Seat belt use is up for both drivers and right-front passengers.
