Michigan State passed a law that protects homeowners who injure intruders using deadly force. Two Detroit home owners and community members has however had this right yanked from right under them.
Burglars broke into a home on Glastonbury Avenue through a side window on a family who was at the time playing video games in their basement. In an effort to protect the rest of the family, a member fired at the intruders who were forced to retreat but not before returning fire. During the back and forth exchange of bullets, the waiting minivan driver of the escape vehicle was hit. Consequently, that caused the driver of the minivan to plow the vehicle into the side of another Glastonbury home.
Damon Bradley and his 29 year old sister were at home when the house was hit. The sister of Bradley was injured and had to be taken to the hospital for immediate medical attention. She was treated and days after was subsequently released. The police are still yet to make an arrest as the two burglars are still at large while the driver lost his life. Members of the community are becoming increasingly petrified by the constant string of violence and are also concerned about the fatal shootings by homeowners.
Although it is perhaps within these homeowners’ rights to protect their dwellings from wrong doers, it is also claiming the lives of faultless passers-by as well, who just happened to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
