Roadside Repair Leads to Bloomfield Tragedy

When cars break down, there is an increased risk of injuries and fatalities on the road. Bloomfield Township provides an unfortunate example involving a man who got killed on November 10 as he was attempting to make repairs to his car.

According to WXYZ-TV Action News 7:

The incident completely blocked off sections of Telegraph Road near Orchard Lake Road for a few hours. Based on police reports, a 2011 Ford pickup truck crashed into a 1992 Toyota Camry that was stalled in the leftmost lane of the road.

146 Auto-Deer Crashes Every Day in Michigan

On an average day in Michigan there will be 146 collisions between deer and motor vehicles – and autumn is the most dangerous time of the year. Many crashes go unreported, which means the actual total is likely even higher.

According to the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center:

  • The rate of accidents in 2010 was nearly 56,000 vehicle-deer crashes.
  • In 2011, there were over 53,000 vehicle deer incidents.
  • Eight people lost their lives, and nearly 1,500 injuries were sustained from these crashes.
  • Incidents go up in October and November.

Private Companies and the Federal Government Take Aim at Truckers’ Health

Nearly 4,000 people die and 100,000 are injured each year in the United States in vehicle accidents involving large trucks. While some of these accidents are caused by poor road conditions or driver error, the National Transportation Safety Board reports that serious medical conditions of commercial vehicle drivers have “directly contributed to significant fatal and injury crashes.”

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports 12 percent of accidents involving tractor-trailers were caused by drivers who dozed off, had a heart attack, were in diabetic shock or had some other health problem.  Excessive weight can be a factor in all of … Read More
